NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Carnival Valor has docked in New Orleans following a lady jumped from a balcony into the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the United States Coast Guard, a 32-year-previous girl went overboard on the cruise ship about 2:28 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 16 about 150 miles offshore Southwest Pass, Louisiana.
The ship left from Cozumel, Mexico around 3:27 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 15. It returned to dock in New Orleans about 10:30 a.m. on Thurs., Feb. 17.
A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line states the guest jumped from her balcony and was not in handcuffs, in spite of passengers’ early statements.
Mobile cellphone online video of the incident received by FOX 8 demonstrates a few protection guards keeping a woman’s arms guiding her again not cuffed. She gets up and screams the title “Alicia” just before remaining assisted up a flight of stairs and off of the pool deck. The video then cuts to moments soon after the girl jumped, and crews can be found speeding to the edge of the ship to throw in a life preserver.
It is unclear when during the incident the female jumped or wherever from.
Travellers say she jumped off the tenth floor and strike the side of the ship prior to hitting the h2o facial area initially. They say the girl disappeared shortly right after crews tossed daily life preservers and a flare marking her position.
In pictures shared to Twitter and FOX 8, an empty everyday living preserver was found in the h2o off the facet of the ship.
The ship circled for several hours prior to the Coastline Guard took about research and rescue initiatives. All-around 5:37 p.m., the Coast Guard suspended the lookup.
“The choice to suspend a lookup-and-rescue situation is never a person we arrive to flippantly,” mentioned Main Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, Command Responsibility Officer at Sector New Orleans. “We present our deepest sympathies to the relatives for the duration of this tricky time.”
